Download the Eearth 3 Font (The new Version of the Earth Language Font)

(elsys3.zip: size on disk: 16kb, Renewed on Sep. 1, 2007):
This Font was developed by Jo Chen (German), and is completely different
from the original Font Overlay System
(before sep. 2006).
You can type compounded characters directly without an overlay program; it also must work in any computer.
(the "Earth 3" font has been tested with Word, Excel, Papyrus, Outlook Express, PaintShop and PaperPort)
Details of some bases shapes were also renewed for more distinguishable when compounded with others.

The Renewal of Earth 3 Font (Sep. 1st, 2007)
#gf mark has been changed from into (a hyphen-like mark in the 1/4 frame width space)
by the help of Jo Chen (German). If you have the older EL Font, please upgrade. At that time, remove the old Earth 3 first; and install the new one there: both have the same name.

Installation:
Extract elsys3.zip in a temporary folder to open the ttf-file, and choose "install."
It will be installed into the Fonts Folder in your computer.
EL Font is automatically registered, and you can type EL in your writing software.
(In case you have the former EL Font (before sep. 2006),
you can keep it to read the easy text you downloaded.)

For emailing, format as 'rich text' or 'HTML,' and choose the Earth 3 for font,
with larger font size as 22 or so. (Some bases are not clear enough in smaller sizes.)
An EL email receiver also should have the Earth 3 font in their computer.

To type EL new fonts and compounded characters (c-cs):

# Type a basis and press the space key to set the basis. Be sure not to press 'enter' before pressing 'space.'

# Continuous typing compounds the bases on top of all typed together; so use this way for a c-c.
e.g. continuously type {,oO} and press the space key, appears compounding { }.
*Alert: Be careful not to press one key for a long time.
If you do this, a basis could be compounded hundreds times, but you can't notice it visually.
# The directions for using the Eath3 font in MS Word:
Switch off all typing helps, automatic correction and modified quotation marks. If not, those functions will change your EL writing automatically.

# See the following section to know which basis associates with which key of an ordinary American keyboard.
The EL ASCII 3 is for typing "Earth 3" font, or the substitute of the EL bases.

Suggestions and problems
# When you have a possibility to edit your writing later, starting a paragraph
by pressing the space key (making an indent) might be better.
If not, you might not be able to select the first basis of a paragraph.

# Some software makes strange happenings on various occasions;
please try to learn how it works on your system.
Cut-and-paste might not be always as easy as the ordinary writings.
A print of Outlook mail makes EL c-cs there gradually shifted.
So when you need printing, copying the content into Word works better.
Internet Explorer occasionally sifts contents of a compounded character, while Firefox can always show c-cs in the right way.

EL ASCII 3: The EL ASCII has been renewed for Earth 3 Font

EL ASCII and the shapes of a few EL bases also have been renewed (since October 2006):
from August through October, Jo Chen and Yoshiko had discussions involving many others,
testing many trial fonts and ASCII (through the versions 2.1-2.4a-k and 2.5)
for more efficiency to learn and to use EL. Thanks for all who gave us opinions.
This is not for the final and ideal version of EL keyboard setting; and
inconvenient cases are included: e.g. @ is for often needed (preposition mark);
and this is not easy to type especially for Europeans.
In the future, getting more users and experiences, the EL standard keyboard should be created.
This is a temporary step to get there, so please be patient for some inconveniences
* When using the original font and the font-overlay tool, you still have to use the original ASCII.

* When you don't have the font, still you can send an EL message using EL ASCII 3 as well as using the bases numbers.

Here is the comparison between the key and the EL font; the description about setting clues and the rules follow.

Additional Services
Since extra keys are still usable, the following are additional services:
To compound a frame choosing from two types (for beginners to know the certain shape of a basis):
: \ (single frame) : | (mesh frame: this might not be seen on a screen in small sizes/less than 100% view),
*: * (for marking with a half space by itself)
`: to make a half space (to save a space in a half between sentences or for a period, press ` instead of the whole space key.)
The Clues and the Rules for ASCII 3:
This new setting is a compromise between the original ASCII clues (1-3) and the simple rules (4) by Jo Chen.
(I know some people don't agree with i/I or n/N, feeling unnatural by this new setting,
but even if for the temporary step, I'd like to keep EL in one way.
So honoring Jo Chen's new Font idea, I decided to use his ASCII idea too.)
When you type an EL basis, it is directly for an image or a function.
Also EL ASCII works for a substitute of EL bases with each images or functions
among people without the EL font. So if the alphabet keys and the EL bases are assorted with
each other in their shapes/functions/images, you feel natural to work with them.
But sometimes feelings are not always the same among people;
regularity can help to know which is capital letter or normal. 4) is about the rules.

1) The functions are similar:

# EL bases, whose functions are similar to English marks such as the numerals,
mathematical marks and the period of a sentence
, are associated to each mark.
: 0, -: 1-9, : - + = ? . ,

#These phonetic functions are similar to each other:
: [p], : [w], : [e]

#Grammatical functions are similar:
: & (conjunction),
: @ (preposition, including at )
: ~ (relation/connection: to show that the both sides characters are connected in one concept)

2) The shapes are similar:

Brackets for EL brackets (usage/functions are different):
[   ] , : (  ), : {  }

: " (doubled) : , (a dot) : _ ( upper space of the bottom line)
: : (two vertical dots), : <,   : >,    : /,
: r,  : $ (curve and straight),   : Y,
: ! (a line), : u,   : x ,   : X,   : o,
: O,   : % (two circles), : A (similar roofs and phonetic functions also)
: S,  : v,  : D,   : G,   : H (sort of square)
: # (vertical two lines),   : J, : K (pointing the left),
: L,   : ^ (the angles are different though), : z,
: Z (diagonal, but similar for hand-moving sign), : c,   : C,
: M,  : I (looking like a track of dripping water),
: ' (as the tiny mark at the upper edge of a word/c-c)

3) Clues through English elemental words, having the similar meaning to each basis
(contortions for memorization):
: b (of bit),  : B (of Big),   : T (the standing stick touches to the Top line)
: N (of Nature),  : f (off ever/ f ire),  : F (of Force),
: Q (of Quick),   : q (of quell)

4) The Rule:

This is adapted for sharing the same key with the similarly shaped basis .
Between the similar shaped bases, the following bases take capital letters.
1, the higher/bigger bases
2, having a pointing up tip
3, the open shape roundly closed above

f/F, q/Q, b/B, c/C, v/V, i/I, j/J, d/D, s/S, l/L, g/G, n/N, ;/: could be set in the opposite ways too,
but because of this rule, ASCII 3 was set as above.
* To help memorizing the new ASCII, the clues 2) or 3) for some of bases were changed from the original.
* 90 degree shifted bases from each other are not partner bases for their usage: symbolically unrelated,
even if the shapes are similar. Remind it when learning the usage of the font.

*Recommendation: Learning each basis image and function together through the dictionary pages,
your body can memorize all at once including ASCII; and you won't easily forget them.
That way, you can start using EL at the right away, contrary to mastering alphabets
doesn't immediately invite you to use a language with them.

Download the Earth 3 Font
(elsys3.zip: size on disk: 16kb, Renewed on Sep. 1, 2007):

Jo Chen

f/F, q/Q, b/B, c/C, v/V, i/I, j/J, d/D, s/S, l/L, g/G, n/N, t/T, ;/:
