Monthly Poem and Pictograph [open door] by A. Thiagarajan - July 2008 -

. . . .

This is an EL (Earth Language) experimental page to enjoy
the image of a haiku/short poem originally in English/Japanese.
When you can't see the Japanese parts, please don't mind and just skip those parts, or see here to view Japanese.

Recently an'ya in Oregon sent me a copy of “moonset LITERARY NEWSPAPER”
(spring/summer 2008) carrying this April version of the EL poem site. In the paper,
I liked many Indian haiku translated into English by Angelee Deodhar.
But here I translated another Indian, A. Thiagarajan's haiku. It was originally in English..

The first line of this haiku looks tricky to me. Usual English describes it as
"the open door" (open is an adjective) or "open the door" (open is a verb; and it's a commandment).
Since "the" is omitted here, I got these doubled images through this haiku.
Whether  the door is physically closed or open, nature brings dawn to my bedside.
The door always opens for dawn....
Even when sleeping only a few hours, dawn wakes me up silently over the thick curtain.
It's a moment to feel the greatness of nature beyond the human scale, in our daily lives.
The original haiku was with a bird haiga by Carolina Wren, but my pictograph is silent.
We can enjoy haiku in various ways. (To the haiku)

すばらしいハイク集もありましたが、ここではやはりインドのA. Thiagarajanさんの英語ハイクを訳しました。

1行目のopen doorは、ふつうの英語なら
the open door (openは形容詞で「開いたドア」または
open the door (openは他動詞で「戸をあけろ」の命令)と書かれるところでしょう。

The original haiku by A. Thiagarajan:

open door
_dawn enters
without ringing

The Japanese translation:
開くドア 夜明けは鈴(リン)も押さず侵入す

The EL translation:

The symbol in the pictograph:
: door (戸)

The symbols in the translation:
{{place,container} room,(limit)}: door (戸)
{verb mark, preposition mark}: to show the following verb modifies the front word
vi. open (開く)
I tried to translate this part as "the door that opens"
("a open door" is shown by :) (「開いている戸」ではなく「開く戸」と表現しました)
: a pause (ポーズ)
{a part of the sun, out (from the horizon), time}: sunrise time/ dawn (日の出時、夜明け)
(inside) : vi. enter, be inside (入る)
{ preposition mark, not/denied}: without (no joining of the following word) (〜なしに(の))
{request of {recognition,feeling}: perception, notice (as v.)}:
call, calling one's attention (呼びかけ)
{ear-shape and time, 42wave}: sound (a sort of wave recognized by 'ear' and with 'time') (音)

* According to the haiku author, A. Thiagarajan's mail, he is very interested in EL and started to learn it in India having too many languages and troubles because of them. I look forward to seeing his original EL haiku sometime.
* このハイクのThiagarajanさんからのメールによると、多言語問題を抱えるインドにあって彼は地球語に希望を持ち、タミル語や英語でインドに紹介したいと学びはじめてくださってるそうです。いつか彼ご自身の地球語作品を拝見するのが楽しみです。
